Description

This stock certificate (No. 2219) represents $500 for the Republic of Texas. It is signed by James B. Shaw who worked as the Secretary of the Treasury during Sam Houston's second term. He was integral in the Compromise of 1850.

Notable Bond Imagery

In the top-center one man resembling the Greek God Hermes lays on the floor with a cloth covering him next to a standing man in a sailor suit who is pointing toward a boat on the ocean. On the left a woman draped in cloth embraces a bald eagle. Ten coupons (two rows of five) numbered 1-10 line the bottom of the certificate. The years 1840-1845 are listed.

						The Republic of Texas stock certificate reads:
No. 2119 Republic of Texas Certificate of Stock in the ten per cent consolidated fund.
Created by Act of Feb. 5th 1840
	Be it known that there is due from the Republic of Texas Edward Hill Five Hundred Dollars Payable to order, with interest at the rate of ten per cent per annum, payable semi-annually on the 15th days of June and Decr. at the Treasury Department, in Gold or Silver, on presentation of this Certificate and delivery of the several interest warrants on the margin hereof, the first payment of interest to be made on the 15th days of Decr 1840.
	The principal redeemable at the pleasure of the Government after the 30th day of June 1845. This certificate to be transferable by simple endorsement Treasury Department. Austin 15 June 1840
